聴覚が正常で健康な赤ん坊は、耳の正常な親のもとに生まれるよりも、耳が不自由でアメリカ手話を使っている両親のもとに生まれた方が早い時期から話をはじめるのである。おもしろいのは、話と言っても声を使うのではなく、両親と同じように手話で話すことだ。

ガルシアはその後の研究を通じて、赤ん坊が誰に教わるでもなく手話で「おなかが空いた、のどが渇いた、おむつが濡れた」と話し始めること、しかもそれが、口から言葉を発する八ヶ月も前であるのを発見した。つまり、赤ん坊の脳はすでに話が出来るほど発達しているのに、まだのどから声が出せないために手を使っているのである。
